Catie Buck is a talented interior designer and project manager with Babcock Design, a regional architecture firm with offices in Salt Lake City and Boise. Catie is a proud Idaho Vandal, midcentury modern enthusiast, Michigan native, and active member of Interior Designers of Idaho.
Q: How did you get into interior design?
I was first turned onto interior design and architecture at age 7. My grandmother had a fantastic midcentury modern house in Michigan that I am still in love with today. I wish I owned that house! From being in and around that house I came to appreciate design and how people behave in spaces.
Q: How do you like to work?
I like to start by talking to each client to get a sense of their company, their company’s brand, and what they like. I love the creative challenge of finding what fits their brand. At Babcock, our work is mostly commercial but I would love the opportunity to work on more residential projects.

Q: What is your favorite project you’ve designed?
Two recent projects immediately come to mind. The new IGI office at Pioneer Crossing and the new Gardner Company office in the 8th and Main / Zions Bank Building.
The IGI office is really amazing. We were able to use the cubicles as amenities, it has a really open feel, and a cafe. Everyone that gets to work there is loving it.
Q: What consultants contributed to the project? Who did the tenant improvement?
Our team worked with Terry Gorseth and Xabier Ovalle of PVE mechanical and electrical engineering to dial in the space. The general contractor, Travis Knutson with Perigee Group, did a great job on the tenant improvement.
Q: What about the new Gardner Company office?
The new Gardner Company office has a classic black and white palette which is very reflective of their new team. It has a very “resi-mercial” comfortable feel. Its casual feel really speaks to the new team.
The same PVE mechanical and electrical team handled the engineering and Larren Novak with Gardner Company executed the tenant improvement in-house.

Q: What technology do you use at work?
I definitely have a love/hate relationship with technology… We design mostly in Revit but use SketchUp for in-house renderings.
We use MS Teams which is kind of new to us but is a great tool for communication between offices. We can video chat with each other and assign and track tasks to make sure we’re on top of everything.
Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t an interior designer?
Honestly, I’d probably be in marketing! I’ve started doing a lot more business development here at Babcock which I’m really loving. I’ve also been helping write proposals and chase down projects.
When I was a kid I wanted to be a marine biologist. I was obsessed with whales and dolphins.

Q: What do you love about working at Babcock Design?
I really love our team. We’re like a family and everybody is great to work with. I really love the projects and clients I’m exposed to. I have the opportunity to learn and grow, and to touch and feel everything. Every day there is something new and interesting to work on.
Everybody here is focused on great customer service.
